Japan – Day 7
April 21, 2026Up for an early start we took the train to Ueno, a busy suburb of Tokyo. I remember when I attended my first class in Japan, many years ago, we were told to go and practise in the park. The idea of training outside was completely new to me then, and initially I felt self conscious. Now, many years on, it is a very natural way to study.
This was a great opportunity for both Debbie and I to repeat the experience, and Ueno is a great place to practise. We discussed the last lesson with Yonemoto Sensei and worked on some of the many different kata applications, focusing on distance, timing and the benefit of correct attitude/intention. We were grateful for the shade of the trees as the sun was hot.
Time went by quickly and we headed back to join Yonemoto Sensei for a special lesson, before the class with his senior grades. Again, this was most rewarding, with Sanseiru kata and application the focus. It is traditional in the Seibukan, for students to demonstrate kata individually so Yonemoto Sensei can observe and correct.
A farewell party, with food arranged by students of the Sebuikan, once more illustrated the kindness and hospitality shown to us throughout our stay. I look forward to seeing them again.
Sayonara, soshite arigato, Nihon! (Goodbye and thank you Japan)
